Natural Light Portraits

Saturday 06 January
Warren Ave, Baltimore - 2pm - 2 Hours

John Heredia
This meet-up will explore how we can take beautiful portraits using natural light and backgrounds. We will explore how to recognise flattering light and how to manipulate it whilst shooting in a less controlled environment than a studio. We will explore how we can work collaboratively with our subject to achieve a portrait that captures their personality and style. We will also look at posing and setting your subject at ease. Technical learning points will include accurate focusing and metering for skin tones.

I enjoyed it very much. Great location, good instruction, a nice group of people, etc. The instructor asked good questions to get a sense of where each of us were at and what we wanted to work on. Felt inspired! It was also a very relaxing experience.

Title or Location: Old Fashioned Girls-Antique Doll Collector Magazine
The photo that I worked from was in Antique Doll Collector Magazine. When I finished it, a noted antique doll dealer bought it from me, and then showed it at a doll convention, telling everyone that it was by an unknown Victorian artist. When I saw my painting in the dealer's booth, I told her helper that the doll was made in 1914, after the Victorian Age was over...and that I was the artist. The look on her face was priceless. They did sell the painting, though, after all.

Watercolor on paper 18?x24? I am inspired by nature and our relationship with it. This image is one that has come from a series of images that I have done blending flowers and foliage with the human form. I think this reminds me that all natural life has thought and feelings, even if we can?t communicate on the same level. Humanizing these things helps to communicate this idea.

After recently discovering collage art, Masked Brown Girl is one of the first collages I created. She's wearing a mask, like many of us do in our day to day lives, to hide her love for the young man in the photo she's holding.

Title or Location: Grow Yourself
Been wanting to paint more so I go online for inspiration and saw a similar image. I loved the message and chose to do a different spin. Using the colors green for growth and a yellow rose at the top for hope. Under a full moon to release all that holds me down. The saying to be brave enough to water your own garden really hit me. Most will not hesitate to help another and helping ourselves has always been taught as selfish. When in reality, is it selfless and allows us all to keep helping one a

Painting 40cm x40cm, acrylic on canvas. Ghost ships that roam the oceans.... can be seen at night in the light of the full moon. In the painting I wanted to capture the spirit of times gone by. Whether I succeeded, judge for yourselves. Thank you.

Title or Location: Florida's Sandhill Crane
In nature, I wait patiently for just the right moment, one that is different but unique to my subject. It?s those unusual positions during grooming, mating ritual, breeding display, or just being silly. I strive to capture the moment that others miss, don?t see or notice. I?ll then use my photography as reference to create, produce and share an art piece that allows others a glimpse into that secret world of lines, colors and details that I see. This Sandhill Crane fit that bill perfectly.
